1891 Canada Census shows Duncan (49) and Jessie (37) living in Moncton, Westmorland, New Brunswick, Canada along with children George (20, Fred (18), Alfred (16), Lester (14), Florence (10), Everett (7), and Harry (5). All were noted to have been born on PEI except Alfred and Everett. Duncan is a carpenter, George is a locomotive fireman, Fred is a grocery clerk, and Alfred is a harness walker. | |||||
Obituary in the 20 Sept 1893 Winthrop Visitor is worded as
follows: "Mr. Duncan Coffin, who has been a resident of
Winthrop for some ten years, died at his residence on North avenue,
September 25th. Mr. Coffin has followed the carpenter's trade, but has
been unable to work for seven months. Three attacks of the grip resulted
in consumption. His age was 56 years. He leaves a large family to mourn
his loss - a widow, six sons and four daughters. The Knights of Pythias, of which organization he was a member, conducted the burial services at Moncton, N.B., and two of his sons accompanied the remains to that place. A funeral service, at which Rev. G. Fuller officiated, was held Tuesday evening." |

1895 City Directory of Chelsea (Winthrop), Mass. states that Duncan died 25 Sept 1893. Alfred Coffin (clerk) was boarding at Mrs. J Coffin's on North Avenue. Fred Coffin (clerk in Medford) also boards with Mrs Jessie Coffin on North Ave. | 1899 City Directory of Chelsea shows Jessie (widow of Duncan) with a home at 40 Winthrop. Boarding with her are Lester S, Fred, and an Artemis W Coffin (?). George W is at 9 James Ave and Alfred is at 26 Fremont. | |||
1901 City Directory of Chelsea, Mass (which includes Winthrop) lists Jessie as widow of Duncan living at 5 Thornton along with Lester S (clerk). George W (carpenter) is at 7 James. Harry F (carpenter) is at 8 Belcher. | 1902 City Directory of Medford, Mass Shows Fred living at 19 Emerson but Jessie has removed to Winthrop. | 1904 City Directory of Chelsea shows Jessie (widow of Duncan) with a home at 63 River Road. Living with her are Alfred E, Everett D, Harry L, Lester S. George W is at 9 James Ave | 1906 City Directory of Chelsea shows George W (carpenter) owns the residence at 10 James Ave while Everett D, Harry L, and Jessie are boarding there. Lester has moved to Arlington. | 1908 City Directory of Chelsea lists Jessie as widow of Duncan and boarding at 336 Shirley Ave along with Everett D (clerk), Harry L (baggage master for Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn Railroad). George W was living at 30 James Ave. | |
